File your taxes for free

The IRS offers a "Free File" program for some taxpayers.
This system was developed via a partnership of the IRS and the Free File Alliance, an organization of private tax software companies, in 2003.

Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $52,000 or less in 2006 can get free tax preparation services and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost - that's more than 70% of all taxpayers.
Why pay an accountant or tax preparation professional to do something the government is willing to give you for free?

Taking advantage of this program is simple. Pick a tax software package, making sure to review the terms and conditions to assure that you meet their rules for free filing of your federal return.

Fees for state tax returns though may apply. To help you along, we've reviewed several of the top tax software providers. To take advantage of the federal free file program, also be sure to check out the IRS's site.
